Visualise Your End Results Before Starting Work

Indian Restaurant 3D Computer DesignAs mentioned in previous tips, the creation of an accurate and detailed floorplan and 3D visuals of your desired end results will help you enormously in your quest to achieve those results as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Finding that your choices don’t work after you have completed work is time-consuming, expensive and frustrating. Often people who have taken the wrong approach and ended up in this situation will give up completely or, worse still, start again but with a similarly mis-guided approach, repeating their failures.  It happens a lot!

If you are happy using general PC applications then there are plenty of fairly cheap home design applications available for home PCs that will do everything you need for any relatively straight-forward home project.  You will find a few of the popular ones in places such as PC World.

These applications are fairly quick to learn and enable you to create your floorplan, choose your colours, position your furniture and lighting and view and change the results in 3D. These types of applications are always limiting when it comes to more demanding projects and arranging finer details, but are great for visualising the smaller domestic interior design project.

At Sunset Interior Design we use professional architectural and design software to produce detailed plans and photo-realistic 3D imaging and walkthroughs for our customers.  Larger domestic and commercial projects demand computer software of incredible versatility, flexibility and quality.  This certainly does not come cheaply, but to meet our clients’ requirements and produce our high standard of work it is essential.

If you would like any help with your domestic or commercial interior design or decorating projects, however small or large, please contact us and we will be delighted to work with you.  We offer a professional, friendly, personal and affordable service to every one of our customers and are here to help you achieve your desired results first time and within budget.

Lighting

Interior Design Lighting Advice and TipsLighting is an essential part of the design of any space and careful consideration needs to be given to both natural and artificial light from the outset.

Natural light is obviously governed by how many windows and doors you have but, less obvious to many people, also depends on the orientation of your space, windows and doors to the movement of the sun and also where you live in the world.  The natural light entering your space will have a different impact on the overall illumination, shadows and the colours you have chosen depending on the above factors.  This is why it is essential to obtain samples of products and place them in the space before making any big decisions.

If you are designing a space from scratch and deciding where windows and doors should be placed, then these placements should take into account orientation, illumination requirements, access requirements, regulations and practicality.

Artificial light is under your control but is a delicate art to get right.  Again, the types of lighting you use will affect the appearance of your colours, fabrics and flooring.  The number of lights, their positioning, brightness and proportions all need to be considered.

To start with you should always consider the different ways in which your space will be used.  For instance, work areas in a kitchen require bright and even lighting for safety, avoiding casting your own shadow over the areas.  Elsewhere a kitchen may require a different ambience, especially if you are intending to eat in there too.

A living room will often have multiple uses and therefore will require a flexible lighting arrangement.  Often you will require directional lighting for reading, dimmable lighting for watching television, stronger lighting if intending to work in the room and possibly lighting to create an ambience suitable for entertaining.

There are a multitude of options available these days when it comes to artificial lighting.  It is very easy to spend a small fortune, but if you have a defined plan from the start you can optimise your lighting requirements to avoid over-spending.

It is also important to consider factors such as your energy consumption and bulb replacement rates when choosing lighting.  Green choices are becoming more and more popular, for good reason, and are due to become regulation in the not too distant future.

At Sunset Interior Design we consider lighting requirements very carefully, taking into account all the areas mentioned above, as well as providing specialised lighting for specific applications.

Choosing Colours, Furniture, Fabrics, Flooring, Fittings and Accessories

Example Mood BoardHaving a plan and having visuals of your end results before starting work are never as important as when you are shopping for your paint, wallpaper, furniture, fabrics, flooring, fittings and accessories.

Many people treat these elements separately, purchasing items they like individually but without seeing them truly in context with the other items they’re buying.

It is vital to obtain samples of products before buying the quantities you will eventually require.  It’s also not sufficient to simply view items in the shops.  It’s very important to make sure you have products in the space where they will end up so that you can view them together, in context and, importantly, in the actual light they will be in.

For instance, how many times have you bought paint that looked fantastic in the store and then been amazed how
different it looked on your own walls?

Most stores and suppliers will be happy to provide you with samples, so just ask.  Even if they cost a little money it is well worth it to avoid later disappointment and expense.

At Sunset Interior Design we source products very carefully bearing in mind the overall design, how each product will compliment the others and their practicality for the space in which they will be used.  We obtain samples and produce mood boards which can be presented on location to show colours, fabrics and materials in context and allow you to see and feel these products before spending money on them.  This helps to ensure that unnecessary expense and hassle is avoided later in the project correcting things which don’t look as expected.

How Will You Use The Space?

2D Computer Generated FloorplanIt is very important when designing any space to consider not only the overall look, but also the practicalities of using that space on a day to day basis.

While you are considering the overall look and feel that you would like to achieve, also pay attention to how you will use the space and imagine, in as much detail as possible, actually being in that space and doing the things you know you will need or want to do.

This can help you identify any problems regarding the layout of the space and positioning of various elements.  Do doors open the right way?  Is there enough space around furniture? Is there enough natural light and sufficient opening windows? Will there be enough electrical points?  Are the surfaces, fabrics and flooring suitable for the uses they will be subjected to?  Is there enough storage?

The better you can imagine yourself in the new space and even act out your use of it the more potential issues you will be able to identify and avoid problems further down the line.

Create yourself a floorplan, to scale, of your required design so you have something accurate to refer to at all stages of the project and to avoid any confusion when working with suppliers and contractors.

At Sunset Interior Design we always try hard from the outset to understand how our customers imagine using their new space and what their expectations are of it.  We then bring our expertise to discuss design options, bearing in mind the look, feel, practicality and, importantly, any necessary rules and regulations, to finalise a professionally produced floorplan and 3D imaging.
