Visualise Your End Results Before Starting Work

Indian Restaurant 3D Computer DesignAs mentioned in previous tips, the creation of an accurate and detailed floorplan and 3D visuals of your desired end results will help you enormously in your quest to achieve those results as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Finding that your choices don’t work after you have completed work is time-consuming, expensive and frustrating. Often people who have taken the wrong approach and ended up in this situation will give up completely or, worse still, start again but with a similarly mis-guided approach, repeating their failures.  It happens a lot!

If you are happy using general PC applications then there are plenty of fairly cheap home design applications available for home PCs that will do everything you need for any relatively straight-forward home project.  You will find a few of the popular ones in places such as PC World.

These applications are fairly quick to learn and enable you to create your floorplan, choose your colours, position your furniture and lighting and view and change the results in 3D. These types of applications are always limiting when it comes to more demanding projects and arranging finer details, but are great for visualising the smaller domestic interior design project.

At Sunset Interior Design we use professional architectural and design software to produce detailed plans and photo-realistic 3D imaging and walkthroughs for our customers.  Larger domestic and commercial projects demand computer software of incredible versatility, flexibility and quality.  This certainly does not come cheaply, but to meet our clients’ requirements and produce our high standard of work it is essential.

Proportions and Optical Illusions

proportionsandopticalillusionsProportions of a space and everything within it are extremely important and often overlooked by many people.

The sizes of your furniture, appliances, artwork and lighting should typically be in proportion to the overall size of your space. If you have a large room with a tiny sofa & tiny fireplace in it, clearly the overall proportions will look wrong. Similarly if you have an oversized sofa in a small living room, besides the obvious practicality issues, it will simply look wrong. These are extremes, but it’s easy to go wrong with less extreme sizing differences.

As mentioned in our earlier tips, a well planned and presented floorplan and 3D visualisation that includes the items mentioned above will help you greatly in making sure proportions for a space are correct and that your design will look as you expect.

There are a number of optical illusions that can either be used to your advantage during the design process or that can catch you out if you’re not aware of them. They can be used to visually manipulate space rather than physically manipulate it by adjusting walls or ceilings for example, therefore saving a lot of hassle and expense.

The use of colours, tones and patterns to manipulate space is a key design technique which is very effective if done correctly. For instance, warm colours appear to advance, so a room painted red will appear smaller than the same room painted in cool colours, such as blue or green, which tend to recede. Tone can be used to add or detract from this effect. Dark tones, even with cool colours, will advance while light tones will open up a space.

These properties can be used to change the proportion of a space. For instance, if you paint a ceiling in a darker tone than the walls, it will appear lower. If you paint a long, narrow hallway with lighter, cooler colours it will appear more spacious, as well as reflecting more light.

The use of patterns to achieve similar effects is also common. For instance, vertically striped wallpaper on the walls will help counteract the effect of a low ceiling.  Horizontal blinds will make windows appear wider.

At Sunset Interior Design we understand these and many more effects and always use and combine them effectively during the design process.

Artwork

Commissioned Canvas Painting of SunsetArtwork is obviously a very personal choice, though choosing artwork, whether graphical or sculptural, that will compliment the design of a space is also important.

In this regard, the proportions, shape, orientation and location of your chosen artwork and the colours used are very important, as well as the feeling evoked by the artwork complimenting the intended ambience of the space.  The way the artwork is lit is also extremely important.

Taking great care when choosing artwork to compliment a designed space is well worth the effort.  Well chosen artwork should always lift your spirit.

If you are struggling to find suitable artwork for your space either in the shops or online then consider having artwork created with your specific needs in mind.  It doesn’t have to be very expensive to have a successful and pleasing work of art created.  You can have framed canvasses painted or even have images painted or airbrushed directly onto walls or even ceilings. You can also have digital images of your choice printed onto wallpaper for you.  Don’t be limited by what you see in the shops.

At Sunset Interior Design we can help choose artwork to compliment the design of your space, create bespoke artwork and source specialised artwork products.  There is always a solution to meet everybody’s taste and budget.

Lighting

Interior Design Lighting Advice and TipsLighting is an essential part of the design of any space and careful consideration needs to be given to both natural and artificial light from the outset.

Natural light is obviously governed by how many windows and doors you have but, less obvious to many people, also depends on the orientation of your space, windows and doors to the movement of the sun and also where you live in the world.  The natural light entering your space will have a different impact on the overall illumination, shadows and the colours you have chosen depending on the above factors.  This is why it is essential to obtain samples of products and place them in the space before making any big decisions.

If you are designing a space from scratch and deciding where windows and doors should be placed, then these placements should take into account orientation, illumination requirements, access requirements, regulations and practicality.

Artificial light is under your control but is a delicate art to get right.  Again, the types of lighting you use will affect the appearance of your colours, fabrics and flooring.  The number of lights, their positioning, brightness and proportions all need to be considered.

To start with you should always consider the different ways in which your space will be used.  For instance, work areas in a kitchen require bright and even lighting for safety, avoiding casting your own shadow over the areas.  Elsewhere a kitchen may require a different ambience, especially if you are intending to eat in there too.

A living room will often have multiple uses and therefore will require a flexible lighting arrangement.  Often you will require directional lighting for reading, dimmable lighting for watching television, stronger lighting if intending to work in the room and possibly lighting to create an ambience suitable for entertaining.

There are a multitude of options available these days when it comes to artificial lighting.  It is very easy to spend a small fortune, but if you have a defined plan from the start you can optimise your lighting requirements to avoid over-spending.

It is also important to consider factors such as your energy consumption and bulb replacement rates when choosing lighting.  Green choices are becoming more and more popular, for good reason, and are due to become regulation in the not too distant future.

At Sunset Interior Design we consider lighting requirements very carefully, taking into account all the areas mentioned above, as well as providing specialised lighting for specific applications.
