Proportions and Optical Illusions

proportionsandopticalillusionsProportions of a space and everything within it are extremely important and often overlooked by many people.

The sizes of your furniture, appliances, artwork and lighting should typically be in proportion to the overall size of your space. If you have a large room with a tiny sofa & tiny fireplace in it, clearly the overall proportions will look wrong. Similarly if you have an oversized sofa in a small living room, besides the obvious practicality issues, it will simply look wrong. These are extremes, but it’s easy to go wrong with less extreme sizing differences.

As mentioned in our earlier tips, a well planned and presented floorplan and 3D visualisation that includes the items mentioned above will help you greatly in making sure proportions for a space are correct and that your design will look as you expect.

There are a number of optical illusions that can either be used to your advantage during the design process or that can catch you out if you’re not aware of them. They can be used to visually manipulate space rather than physically manipulate it by adjusting walls or ceilings for example, therefore saving a lot of hassle and expense.

The use of colours, tones and patterns to manipulate space is a key design technique which is very effective if done correctly. For instance, warm colours appear to advance, so a room painted red will appear smaller than the same room painted in cool colours, such as blue or green, which tend to recede. Tone can be used to add or detract from this effect. Dark tones, even with cool colours, will advance while light tones will open up a space.

These properties can be used to change the proportion of a space. For instance, if you paint a ceiling in a darker tone than the walls, it will appear lower. If you paint a long, narrow hallway with lighter, cooler colours it will appear more spacious, as well as reflecting more light.

The use of patterns to achieve similar effects is also common. For instance, vertically striped wallpaper on the walls will help counteract the effect of a low ceiling.  Horizontal blinds will make windows appear wider.

At Sunset Interior Design we understand these and many more effects and always use and combine them effectively during the design process.

Artwork

Commissioned Canvas Painting of SunsetArtwork is obviously a very personal choice, though choosing artwork, whether graphical or sculptural, that will compliment the design of a space is also important.

In this regard, the proportions, shape, orientation and location of your chosen artwork and the colours used are very important, as well as the feeling evoked by the artwork complimenting the intended ambience of the space.  The way the artwork is lit is also extremely important.

Taking great care when choosing artwork to compliment a designed space is well worth the effort.  Well chosen artwork should always lift your spirit.

If you are struggling to find suitable artwork for your space either in the shops or online then consider having artwork created with your specific needs in mind.  It doesn’t have to be very expensive to have a successful and pleasing work of art created.  You can have framed canvasses painted or even have images painted or airbrushed directly onto walls or even ceilings. You can also have digital images of your choice printed onto wallpaper for you.  Don’t be limited by what you see in the shops.

At Sunset Interior Design we can help choose artwork to compliment the design of your space, create bespoke artwork and source specialised artwork products.  There is always a solution to meet everybody’s taste and budget.

Know Your Style

Bringing a little African style back to Sheffield!Do you have a clear vision of your desired end result? Be honest with yourself here, can you ‘really’ see what you want?

Are you going contemporary, traditional or minimalist? How about ultra-modern? What feelings do you want your new space to evoke in you?

If it isn’t clear in your mind what you are trying to achieve then you run the risk of losing focus in your project and potentially wasting a lot of time and money trying to achieve your desired results.

We have come across people who have tried time and again to design and decorate their rooms themselves without ever being satisfied with the end results. They start to realise that interior design is not as simple and straight-forward as some TV programmes would have you believe.

Try and clarify in your mind exactly what you are trying to achieve and write it down so you don’t forget whilst actually working on the project.

If you can, obtain a 3D visual image of your desired look before even starting work. Computer imaging is ideal as you are able to make changes to any aspect of the design without starting again. Computer graphics are so sophisticated these days that incredibly realistic and accurate images can be produced and they can also allow you to move through the design in 3D. 3D imaging allows you to have real confidence in your goals before spending any time or money working towards them.

At Sunset Interior Design we strive to understand our customer’s style preferences and ideal results from the outset and help them visualise the end outcome with the aid of 3D computer imaging and 360 degree walkthroughs. When you see your new space in this way it really helps alleviate any doubts or fears you may have about your early decisions and helps prevent expensive and time consuming mistakes.

Our professional design and architectural computer software allows incredible attention to detail and produces superb plans and 3D images. We can even incorporate existing artwork, images, materials, wallpaper etc from an existing room or from a supplier or store.

If you would like any help with your domestic or commercial interior design or decorating projects, however small or large, please contact us and we will be delighted to help you. We offer a professional, friendly, personal and affordable service to every one of our customers and are here to help you achieve your desired results first time and within budget.

Work To A Plan

2D Restaurant PlanWhen starting any interior design or decorating project, it is important to have a complete plan to work to. If you don’t, you can easily find your projects losing focus, taking much longer and costing much more than you initially bargained for.

A plan means you know what you want the end results to be and you know how you are going to achieve those results. Depending on your project, your plan can be anything from a couple of lines, if you are just painting a room for example, to many pages in length if you are managing a large project with multiple contractors and suppliers.

We have all seen the programmes on TV such as Grand Designs and the many different ways in which people tackle their projects. Without exception, those that fail to plan initially always end up spending much more time and money achieving their objectives. Some people like to work like that and enjoy the organic growth and development of their project around them, but most people don’t have the time or money to take that approach.

The idea of planning is to make sure you have a defined goal and defined steps to reach that goal in a specified time and budget. It might seem a laborious process and you may want to just ‘get on with it’, but planning is well worth the time and effort if you have limited time and money and don’t want to be a source of great annoyance to your suppliers and contractors!

At Sunset Interior Design we always help our customers plan their projects carefully from the start and ensure that the best use of space is made, measurements are accurate, design planning rules are adhered to, end results can be visualised before starting work and all trades and suppliers are scheduled correctly to ensure a smooth job is carried out from start to finish. This way we give our customers the very best chance of achieving their desired results first time and within budget.

Our customers are free to work the plan themselves and choose their own suppliers and contractors, or we can manage the entire project from start to finish to take away any potential stress and burden that any medium to large project can bring with it.

If you would like any help with your domestic or commercial interior design or decorating projects, however small or large, please contact us and we will be delighted to help you. We offer a professional, friendly, personal and affordable service to every one of our customers and are here to help you achieve your desired results first time and within budget.
