Hallway Interior Design Advice and Tips

Hallway Interior DesignHallways are typically the first space you enter in a property, but are so often neglected.  A hallway needs to reflect the overall feeling you wish to get when entering a property, but they are often poorly designed and poorly lit spaces.  Your feelings and mood will be affected either positively or negatively when entering a property depending on how well the hallway design has been executed.

Lighting is a common problem in hallways, often suffering from a lack of natural light and large, non-reflective surfaces.  Mirrors can make a huge difference.  A large, well proportioned mirror positioned to reflect any available light is an easy addition and can both reflect more light and add to the illusion of more space.

If there are windows in the hallway, ensure they aren’t covered by materials that block out any of the available light.  If the windows don’t have patterned, privacy glass in them then consider using a frosting spray or very light voile material to ensure privacy is maintained without affecting the light entering the hallway.

The hallway design should not be considered in isolation. There will be a number of different rooms leading off from the hallway.  It may well be possible to see into a number of these rooms when in the hallway and conversely see into the hallway from each of those rooms.  Having conflicting design in these areas will therefore not be pleasing on the eye and will detract from the overall design and feeling of the property.

One of the biggest temptations in day-to-day living is to clutter up the hallway.  Leaving various items and clothing around in a hallway is a surefire way to create a negative feeling when entering the property and making the space feel much smaller, so clear the clutter away.  This is especially important if your hallway space is quite limited to start with.  The smaller the hallway the clearer and less cluttered it should be kept.

When considering flooring for a hallway, remember it must be practical to cope well with water and dirt being brought in from outside.  The wrong choice of flooring for such a heavily used area will result in it deteriorating rapidly. Also consider robust, wipeable paints and wall coverings for this high-traffic area.

At Sunset Interior Design we bring our expert design skills to help ensure you achieve the most from your hallway, both from a practical and design point-of-view, bearing in mind all the points raised above.  We offer a complete one-stop design and decorating service, from design to completion, if desired.

Kitchen Interior Design Advice and Tips

Kitchen DesignKitchens are arguably the most important room in a home.  Often they are a focal point for not only cooking but also eating meals and entertaining.

A kitchen’s design should take into account all the functions and uses required of it.  The owner’s lifestyle, entertaining requirements, cooking and food preparation habits, types of appliances, ventilation, storage and its access and, most importantly of all, safety all need taking into account.

A kitchen needs to be a blend of quality, style and practicality. It should be designed with all the above areas and the available space in mind from the outset.  It is amazing how many kitchens appear to be ‘off-the-shelf’ and shoe-horned into an existing space with no consideration for design or practicality.

The amount of time spent in kitchens dictates special care when designing them.  Any initial small annoyances, an inconvenient layout, poor lighting, lack of workspace, insufficent power points or storage areas will quickly become major headaches in no time at all.

There are also many rules and regulations that need considering when designing kitchens.

Our advice is always to consult professionals when designing kitchens.  There are simply so many things to think about and that could go wrong that trying to muddle your way through can be an intensely frustrating and expensive experience.

Sunset Interior Design are trained kitchen designers and can work with you from initial concepts, planning, design and illustration right through to project managing the installation.  We take the guesswork out of kitchen design and ensure you get the stylish, practical and functional room you desire and need.

Make Sure Everyone Is In Agreement

austin-powers-themed-bedroomIt’s amazing how many people make design decisions without consulting or agreeing them with other people who use the same space.

Everybody has different tastes and different ideas about design.  Everyone has opinions and ideas to bring to the table.  It is therefore essential that if you’re designing a space that will be used by more than one person that everyone has their say.

If two people have different preferences for colours and styles, an interior designer can create a design that is pleasing to both.  Sometimes an eclectic mix is the solution but it has to be done very carefully.

Some people find it very hard to visualise a proposed design and therefore hard to have an opinion until the project has progressed so far that it’s too late to change.  This is why producing 3D imaging of proposed designs and obtaining samples of products, materials and paints before starting work is a huge advantage to everybody concerned.

Visualise Your End Results Before Starting Work

Indian Restaurant 3D Computer DesignAs mentioned in previous tips, the creation of an accurate and detailed floorplan and 3D visuals of your desired end results will help you enormously in your quest to achieve those results as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Finding that your choices don’t work after you have completed work is time-consuming, expensive and frustrating. Often people who have taken the wrong approach and ended up in this situation will give up completely or, worse still, start again but with a similarly mis-guided approach, repeating their failures.  It happens a lot!

If you are happy using general PC applications then there are plenty of fairly cheap home design applications available for home PCs that will do everything you need for any relatively straight-forward home project.  You will find a few of the popular ones in places such as PC World.

These applications are fairly quick to learn and enable you to create your floorplan, choose your colours, position your furniture and lighting and view and change the results in 3D. These types of applications are always limiting when it comes to more demanding projects and arranging finer details, but are great for visualising the smaller domestic interior design project.

At Sunset Interior Design we use professional architectural and design software to produce detailed plans and photo-realistic 3D imaging and walkthroughs for our customers.  Larger domestic and commercial projects demand computer software of incredible versatility, flexibility and quality.  This certainly does not come cheaply, but to meet our clients’ requirements and produce our high standard of work it is essential.

If you would like any help with your domestic or commercial interior design or decorating projects, however small or large, please contact us and we will be delighted to work with you.  We offer a professional, friendly, personal and affordable service to every one of our customers and are here to help you achieve your desired results first time and within budget.
